"It matters not what goal you seek
Its secret here reposes:
You've got to dig from week to week
To get Results or Roses."
Written above is an excerpt from Edgar Guest's poem entitled "Results and Roses". That excerpt, or even the whole poem itself, tells us of the reality of life in terms of our aspirations. We, naturally, have many goals and dreams. We want so much things in life that we think would make us feel fulfilled or successful or happy. And as our famous Filipino expression goes, "libre ang mangarap." This expression shows the very nature of man to aspire for something to achieve in life. Which in turn is true with every Filipino. It is true that it is free to aspire for a goal or dream. But the sad thing is, most of us only settle at aspiring things. We do not start on doing something to really achieve it. If we even start to do something, we are only good at the first stage. In fact, we also have a Filipino expression for that: the "ningas kugon" and the "bahala na" attitude. That is why many of us feel frustrated, because we have so much aspiration, too many goals to achieve but cannot.
Going back to the excerpt of the poem, it tells us the reality of life. The reality is that, aspirations do not just come true because we wanted it so much. It will not be achieved just because we wished it upon a star or we prayed to God earnestly about it. The reality is that goals or aspirations come true or will be achieved by hard work. And that reality will not adjust to anyone's special request. There is no shortcut. There is no easy way. It will really require hard work. The line says: "you've got to dig from week to week." That means hard work - not just any kind of work like working smart or whatever. Yes, some things require working smart. Yet, some things do not. But hard work is required in every single goal that we have. This concept of hard work is clear in the line: "from week to week." That line is saying that this work needs to be consistent. It needs perseverance, persistence, and commitment. That is hard work. That work which is accompanied by perseverance, persistence, and commitment is truly hard. It will never be an easy task to maintain. But it is what is required. Many of us cannot do it, because, it is really, really hard. Many of us do not achieve our aspirations in life because the process exhausts us. But that is life. If you want to live life, then, be ready to embrace what it demands.
Do you agree with my view of life
as really challenging and hard? That it really requires hard work to deal with? What are your personal stories of hard work? What are your success stories
coming from hard work? How did you overcome all the hard work life demands?
